Former Mountaineer star Da’Sean Butler has signed a contract with the Miami Heat. He is now the Heat’s 18th player under contract heading into training camp. The terms of his deal remain undisclosed.
Butler was the 42nd player taken in the draft, but the Heat had him rated as the 21st best player on their board. Butler was a second team All-American and averaged over 17 points and 6 rebounds during his senior year at West Virginia. He hit countless big shots for the Mountaineers including two game winners in the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden. The second of those two game winners gave West Virginia their first Big East Tournament Championship in school history. He ended his career at WVU as the third leading scorer in school history behind NBA Hall of Famers Jerry West and Rod Hundley.
Butler slipped in the draft after tearing his ACL in the Final Four against Duke, but doctors expect him to be able to participate in most aspects of camp when the team begins their workouts in late September.
Miami can take up to 20 players into training camp, but will cut the roster to 15 by October 25th. They will play open up the regular season againt the Boston Celtics the very next day.
Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Mario Chalmers, Joel Anthony, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Udonis Haslem, Dexter Pittman, Juwan Howard, Eddie House, Mike Miller, Carlos Arroyo, James Jones, and Jamaal Magloire all hold guaranteed contracts and are all expected to make the 15 man roster for opening night. Tha would leave only one spot open. Hopefully Buter’s knee heals completely and he can show enough to earn his spot on that roster.
