The Philadelphia Eagles have signed former West Virginia fullback Owen Schmitt. Schmitt has been picked up to fill in for Pro Bowl fullback Leonard Weaver who tore his ACL. This is obviously great news for Schmitt, who had been released by Seattle at the end of the preseason.
Leonard had his leg awkwardly bent back Sunday during his first carry of the season against the Green Bay Packers. He was placed on injured reserve Monday with a torn ACL, a season-ending injury that will require surgery.
Schmitt was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the 5th round of the 2008 NFL Draft after having an unforgettable career in Morgantown. Big Owen is still a fan favorite to this day among Mountaineer fans, and hopefully he can get on the field and win the hearts of the fans in Philly. Weaver was the only fullback on the roster for the Eagles so Schmitt should have a great opportunity to win the starting job.
Go get ‘em Big O!
