According to multiple reports, West Virginia is getting ready to put the final pieces of its defensive staff together. It is believed that former Pitt defensive coordinator Keith Patterson will be named WVU’s new linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator.
Patterson was recently named the new defensive coordinator at Arkansas State, but on Friday head coach Gus Malzahn announced that Patterson had resigned to take a job at another FBS program.
There have been rumors of Patterson joining the WVU staff for several days now, and although nothing is official at this moment, all the evidence seems to indicate that he will in fact join the defensive staff at West Virginia.
Patterson spent just one year at Pitt as defensive coordinator. Before coaching at Pitt, he was the defensive coordinator at Tulsa.
Patterson won’t be the only new member of the defensive coaching staff. Erik Slaughter, former defensive line coach at Stephen F. Austin, has apparently accepted the same position with the Mountaineers. The news of Slaughter joining the staff has been out for a couple of days now, and he has been spotted around the WVU football facilities.
It has been a strange coaching search to say the least, but it appears it’s finally coming to an end. We expect there to be some type of official announcement once standard background checks are completed.
Let’s Go Mountaineers!
